This Strawberry Li Hing Slushie is the perfect way to cool down and chill on hot days. The Li hing Powder adds a little salty and sour kick to the sweet strawberries making it so tasty and refreshing. This is a drink recipe you need to try!
What is Li Hing Powder?
What really sets this slushie apart is the Li Hing Mui powder. In Hawaii, Li Hing Mui isn’t just any plum; it’s a popular snack enjoyed in various forms like dried, pickled, or seedless. Originating as a classic Chinese preserved salted plum, known as ‘Traveling Plum’ in Cantonese, it gives the slushie its unique and delicious flavor.
Li Hing Mui powder is made by grinding dried plums into fine dust and then combining them with other ingredients like sugar, salt, and sometimes food coloring. It has a distinct sweet, sour and salty taste. Commonly, this powder is sprinkled on fruits like pineapple, mango, and apples, enhancing their flavor and bringing out their natural sweetness. It’s also popular on candies! If you haven’t tried Li Hing Mui before, I highly recommend that you do.
Where Can I get it?
I usually get my Li Hing Mui powder from Hawaii, with ‘Enjoy’ and ‘Jade’ being my favorite go-to brands. In Hawaii you can find both of these at most grocery stores or big box stores like walmart or target.
If you’re not in Hawaii, no worries – these brands are also available on Amazon, which usually has a good selection!
Just a heads-up: many of these brands include artificial red coloring. So, if that’s a concern for you, it’s worth checking the ingredients list. Jade offers a Natural colored Li Hing Mui powder, which might be a great alternative. They ship to most places in the US, except California.
Tips
- Li Hing Mui is pretty strong in color so be careful because it can stain just about anything.
- Start by tasting it then adding super little by little because a little goes a long way.
The Inspiration
On a trip back to Oahu, I visited Jolene’s. I’d heard a lot about how popular their food was, so I ordered a few items. Then I saw something I’d never seen on a menu before: a strawberry Li Hing slushie. I just had to try it. And wow, was it good! Right then, I knew I had to recreate it myself. If you’re ever on Oahu, I definitely recommend checking out Jolene’s. It’s a must-try!
While exploring different places, you might also want to try your luck at icecasino, where you can discover an array of games, including classics like poker, blackjack, and slot machines. Just as you explore new and unique dishes during your travels, the diverse selection of casino games allows for an exciting and ever-changing gaming experience.
