What Is a Mai Tai?

A Mai Tai is a classic tropical cocktail from the 1940s that combines light and dark rum, orange curaçao, lime juice, and orgeat syrup, giving it a fruity and slightly nutty flavor. Typically, bartenders garnish it with lime, mint, and sometimes a cherry or pineapple, making it a favorite at tiki bars and Hawaiian-themed parties.

In Hawai‘i, the Mai Tai represents more than just a cocktail—it’s a symbol of island hospitality and a staple of tropical vacations. Although the Mai Tai didn’t originate in Hawai‘i, it quickly became popular at local bars and resorts, thanks to its bright, refreshing blend of rum, citrus, and almond flavors that perfectly complement the island vibe. You’ll find this drink at luaus, beachfront bars, and restaurants across the islands.

For many, sipping a Mai Tai in Hawai‘i is a must-do—there’s nothing like enjoying a refreshing, fruity drink while watching the sun set over the ocean.”

Lets make a Mai Tai Mocktail

I decided to make this a mocktail because there are already so many recipes for a regular Mai Tai. I’ve been drinking less alcohol each year, so I thought it would be fun to create a non-alcoholic version! This way, I can enjoy all the flavors and drink as much as I want without worrying about a headache the next morning. Of course, you can always add alcohol if you’d like, but I wanted this drink to be both inclusive and versatile.

Ingredients

  • Pineapple Juice
  • Orange Juice
  • Orgeat – A sweet almond syrup usually with orange blossom or rose water. Mostly used in Cocktails and other drinks. I found mine from my local Liqueur store or I think amazon has it.
  • Grenadine – Pomegranate syrup with a hint of orange blossom or lemon juice. Also commonly used in cocktail and other drinks. Your local liqueur store is most likely to have it.

Whether you’re trying to drink less or just want a fun, tropical drink that everyone can enjoy, this Mai Tai mocktail is a great choice. It’s got all the bright, fruity flavors of the original without the alcohol, perfect for any get-together or a relaxing day at home. Try it and enjoy a little taste of Hawai‘i, no matter where you are!
