Honey Toast is a tasty mix of salty and sweet, hot and cold. It’s made with bread that’s hollowed out and filled with small bread cubes, then baked with delicous honey butter. To finish it off, it’s topped with ice cream and a bit of honey.
What is Honey Toast?
Honey Toast, also known as ‘Honey Bread’ or ‘Brick Toast,’ is a popular dessert in East Asian countries and is quickly gaining popularity in Western countries as well. It consists of a thick slice of white bread that is hollowed out to create a box-like shape. This is then filled with smaller bread cubes coated in a honey-butter mixture. The entire assembly is toasted until crisp and, once done, it is typically topped with ice cream, occasionally fruits, and an extra drizzle of honey.
Where is it from?
Originating in Japan, where it’s known as ‘Shokupan,’ this dessert has gained popularity for its amazing taste and appealing presentation. The charm of Honey Toast lies in the contrast of textures – from the crispness of the toast to the creaminess of the ice cream, and the freshness of the fruits. Its big portion size makes it perfect for sharing with friends and bringing people together!
Where to get Honey Toast in Hawaii?
This dessert is so popular in Hawaii! Growing up on Oahu the only place you would get it and was known for making it was Shokudo. During my high school days that used to be the spot for fancier dinners and birthday celebrations! Doraku also serves Honey Toast but I haven’t tried it from here before so I wouldn’t be able to speak on how good it is.
Let’s Make Honey Toast!
Now, let’s get down to the fun part – making it at home! When I first made this, I was shocked on how easy it was. The flavors and presentation make it look difficult but I assure you, you’ll be impressed. I am almost tempted to make this once a week because of how delicious it is.
Ingredients
- Bread – Uncut White loaf or Milkbread is even better. I got mines from Nijiya Market in San Francisco. If you can’t find it at your local grocery store check a Japanese grocery store.
- Unsalted Butter
- Honey – Enough to mix with the butter and drizzle as a topping
- Ice cream – Whatever your favorite ice cream is!! I usually prefer Vanilla or Oreo Cookies and Cream. So goooood!
Tips and Tricks
- Don’t make the blocks too tall! You can also do shorter blocks and layer them to make them taller but have a nicer appearance.
- Use thick, high quality bread.
- Don’t cut too close to the edges of the bread when hallowing it out because you want it to be sturdy when stacking.
- Feel free to play around with toppings and make it yours!
- Serve immediately! It tastes the best when its still warm and the ice cream is starting to melt.
How to eat it?
Once your Honey Toast is assembled just dig in! I always like to get a scoop of ice cream with a piece of bread! It’s so delicious and just perfect. I know a few people (including me) who don’t really eat the ‘crust’ part of the bread but go for it. It still has that amazing honey butter toasted flavor!
