Furikake Salmon: A Popular Hawaii Dish

This is one of my favorite ways to make salmon!  It’s quick and easy so you don’t have to worry about too much ingredients or prepping.  We didn’t eat this often in my family but when we did it was always a treat.

A lot of plate lunch spots carry Furikake salmon amongst of other delicious local plates. It isn’t hard to find if you’re visiting Oahu. At the end of this post is a couple of locations you can try if traveling there.

What is Furikake?

In Hawaii, Furikake is so popular! Most dishes will have them on rice, vegetables, or sometimes for the crust of the fish like this one.  Furikake is a Japanese condiment/seasoning that has dried seaweed, sesame seeds, sometimes fish flakes, salt, and msg.  There are so many different types of furikake flavorings as well.

Let’s Make Furikake Salmon

I love the combination of mayonnaise, lemon, shoyu, and wasabi.  Its the perfect binder to hold the seasoning on the salmon.  The wasabi is definitely optional if you don’t really enjoy it but it does add a little something to the dish.  Feel free to adjust the ingredients to your own taste as well.  I’m more of a salty/savory person so this recipe works really well for my taste buds!

Ingredients

  • Salmon – I usually get Fresh Atlantic skin on salmon but any salmon of your choice works! I would just get it with skin on.
  • Lemon
  • Mayonnaise
  • Furikake – I know most grocery stores will carry Furikake. If you can’t find it at your local grocery store, check your Asian market. They may have different varieties as well so in this recipe we use Nori Komi Furikake.
  • Shoyu – I use Aloha Shoyu of course!! Use code: Higashiskitchen at checkout to get 15% off your order!
  • Wasabi – Optional but it tastes pretty good with it!

Tips/Tricks

The salmon does cook really quick and the excess sauce on the pan will burn a bit so MAKE SURE you are oiling the baking sheet first!!  This will really help the salmon slide off the baking sheet easily.

The salmon will be done once it has a light brown color and the sesame seeds look toasted.  If you aren’t too sure then another tell sign would be the sauce on the pan.  If its burning and starting to smoke then chances are the salmon is ready! This also will depend on how thick and big your salmon is.

You really don’t need to do much to plate the salmon. I like to serve it over a bed of rice with a side of veggies and add a couple of slices of lemon on the side. It’s a really easy simple delicious meal! I hope you and your family like this recipe, Enjoy!!
