Crafting the Perfect Island Drink: Coconut POG Cocktail
What is POG?
Before we dive into the recipe, let’s talk about the heart and soul of our Coconut POG Cocktail: POG. This delicious blend of passion fruit, orange, and guava nectar not only adds a tropical burst of flavor but also has an interesting backstory. Originating in Maui in the early 1970s, POG was created by Mary Soon, a food product consultant at Haleakala Dairy. Initially introduced to promote a new line of tropical fruit drinks, it has quickly become a beloved staple throughout Hawaii.
What You’ll Need
- POG syrup – I got my POG syrup from Da Kine Hawaiian (use code ALISSAHIGASHI for 15% off). It’s super delicious and great on pancakes as well! Feel free to also use another brand or make your own.
- Vodka – Use your unflavored vodka preference. I usually go for Titos.
- Cream of Coconut – I used this Real infused exotics brand which can also be found at most chain grocery stores! Feel free to use another brand but Coconut cream is not the same as cream of coconut.
- Lime
- Lemon Lime Soda – I love using Betty buzz brand but it should also work with other sparkling brands/flavors if you can’t find exactly lemon-lime.
- Edible Glitter – Optional but it does add a little sparkle to the drink! I had used red/orange edible glitter so my drink did become a darker color! The edible glitter I got was from Fancy Sprinkles.
Tools
- Cocktail Shaker
- Jigger
- Hawthorne Strainer
Tips and Tricks:
- Don’t add the soda until after you shake, so it doesn’t explode everywhere! It should just be topped onto your drink.
Thats is for our Coconut POG Cocktail recipe! I really hope enjoy it as much as I do. It’s perfect for those days when you need a little escape to a sunny beach. If you give it a try, remember, the best part about cooking (or mixology, in this case) is adding your own twist. So feel free to experiment and make it your own. Cheers!!
