Turon (Banana Lumpia)

Turon, or Banana Lumpia, is a yummy dessert made by rolling sweet bananas in brown sugar, wrapping them in egg roll wrappers, and frying until crispy. It’s one of my favorites, especially when served hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Turon: A Sweet Filipino Dessert

Banana Lumpia, or Turon, is one of the best desserts ever! It’s so easy to make, and what I love most is that I can freeze it before frying. Even though I’m not big on sweets, I could eat them all day. Whenever we have family gatherings, I always grab Banana Lumpia before dinner. They’re just too good to wait!

Where did Turon Come From?

Honestly, I’ve always called it Banana Lumpia and only found out its real name a few years ago. It’s a popular Filipino dessert that comes from the Philippines. Being part Filipino myself, it’s a special treat for me. It’s said to be influenced by Chinese food, like egg rolls or spring rolls.

Ingredients

  • Banana: I like to use apple bananas because they’re smaller and sweeter. Make sure they are ripe!
  • Lumpia Wrappers: Egg roll wrappers or spring roll wrappers
  • Brown Sugar
  • Oil: Vegetable oil or neutral oil for frying

How to make Turon

I used regular bananas for this recipe, but it tastes even better with apple bananas or those small sweet ones (though I couldn’t find them in my area). I cut the bananas into quarters first because they were too big to fit onto the wrapper. Then, I mixed brown sugar with a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg. I coated the cut bananas in the brown sugar and placed them on the egg roll wrapper right away, as the sugar starts to melt into it

To wrap your egg rolls, place the wrapper with one corner facing you. Position the banana just below the middle of the wrapper, closest to you. Fold the bottom corner up over the banana and start rolling. When you reach the middle, fold in both side corners and continue rolling. Dab a bit of water on the top corner to seal the roll. If you don’t plan to fry them all at once, you can store them in a ziplock bag in the freezer. They should last for a couple of months before the sugar starts to slowly ooze out.

When frying, the lumpia should turn a golden brown color like the one below! Here’s an optional step: you can make a side “sauce” to roll your lumpia in for extra sweetness. I use equal parts brown sugar and water in a small saucepan until it’s melted. Once the lumpia are fried, drained, and cooled slightly, they can be coated in the sugar sauce. It’ll make them stickier, but totally worth it!

This is one of those treats you can’t stop eating because it’s so good! It’ll also be a huge hit at parties so bring it to your next one! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
